College of SSIS Newsletter
As we begin a new academic year and reflect on the past one, I am grateful for
the community that makes the College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary
Studies (SSIS) such a special place. Our faculty, staff, and students dedicate
themselves to teaching, learning, discovery, and creating positive change on
our campus and in our region. Across departments
and centers, they cultivate learning and research
environments that spark curiosity, examine equity
and social justice, teach scientific inquiry, and
connect students to real-world questions and needs.

ideas. This year, our faculty earned awards and
grants, published scholarly work, developed
new pedagogies, and served the institution and
community, demonstrating the exceptional talent
across SSIS. Recognizing staff members’ years of
service further illustrates the breadth of their contributions as they support students, manage complex administrative processes,
and keep our operations running smoothly—work that is central to the college’s success and spirit.
Our students continue to inspire us through leadership roles, receiving scholarships and awards, and conference presentations,
reminding us of what dedication and opportunity can achieve. I am also grateful for our alumni, whose public service, advocacy,
leadership, and research create meaningful impact throughout the region. Likewise, our donors and community partners, many of
them alumni, provide essential support for scholarships, internships, departments, and community-based programs.
Despite a year of uncertainty marked by budget reductions and leadership transitions, our community responded with resilience,
ingenuity, and genuine care. Looking ahead, we will continue prioritizing student success, supporting faculty and staff, and
securing the resources needed to sustain our momentum.
Serving as Interim Dean has been an honor. As I prepare for retirement after 29 years, I am delighted to welcome a new permanent
Dean and look forward to the fresh possibilities ahead. I invite you to enjoy this newsletter and the stories that showcase the
strength of our SSIS community.
